Object Name Ceramic, Decorative
Collection Object/Artifact Collection
Date ca. 1890s
Description Second of two Terra Cotta Egg and Dart Fragments reported to be from the 1884 Bergen Street Trolley Shed (Part of Brooklyn's Nassau Electric Railroad). These pieces provide a look at typical red, unglazed terra cotta which was used in the facades of countless New York buildings from 1880 through the turn-of-the-century. Later terra-cotta claybodies, such as those found in the subway, were much lighter in color, because darker clays adversely affected the glazes.
