Title Installation of new rail on the Harlem Line
Description Under the Webster Avenue extension of the Third Avenue El in the Bronx, New York Central workers are about to replace the worn rail in the foreground with new "welded" rail on the Harlem Line, just North of the Fordham Road station. For a century rail was laid by bolting together multiple, typically 39-foot long sections, which produced the clickety-clack of lore. Welded rail eliminates nearly all joints, which are the rail's weakest point, thereby increasing safety and reducing maintenance expense.
