Title Power Supply Album 8: No 4799 Powerhouse
Description Photograph documents the construction of Interborough Rapid Transit Company 59th Street Powerhouse. Assembly of machinery in the operating room is shown. A Nernst lamp is shown hanging from the second balcony of the front generator. The Nernst lamp was an early form of electrically powered incandescent lamp, which used a ceramic rod heated to incandescence, rather than a glowing tungsten filament, to provide light. This photograph is stored in Power Supply Album 8 of 12 that documents Interborough Rapid Transit Company's system of electrical power for New York's first subway system.
