Title [Power Supply Album 5: No 1645 74 St Power Station Ash Car]
Description Photograph documents the construction of the Manhattan Railway Company's 74th Street Power Station. Ash chutes and cart are shown. Coal ash ran through these chutes from the bottom of the boilers on the 2nd floor to the basement level in to ash disposal carts like this one, pulled by a small electric locomotive. These carts moved the ash to a pit on the east end of the building. From there they were moved to the East River front by a bucket conveyer and loaded on to boats or wagons for disposal.This photograph is stored in Power Supply Album 5 of 12 that documents the Manhattan Railway Company's electrification of its els.
