Title [Power Supply Album 6: No 5646: Powerhouse Engine Room]
Description Photograph documents the construction of Interborough Rapid Transit Company 59th Street Powerhouse. Construction in the engine room section of the Powerhouse is shown. The wall at the back of the photo was a temporary partition used to separate the finished and unfinished sections of the engine room. The IRT was on such a tight deadline to complete the powerhouse and get the subway system up and running that the powerhouse was built one generator section at a time. As soon as the structure of one section was complete and the generator assembled, it was put in to use while construction of the next section went on behind it. This photograph is stored in Power Supply Album 6 of 12 that documents Interborough Rapid Transit Company's system of electrical power for New York's first subway system.
