Photograph documents the construction of Interborough Rapid Transit Company 59th Street Powerhouse. Construction at the Hudson River front is shown; the coal tower and crane can be seen in the upper right corner of the picture. The tower was used to store coal before it was moved to the powerhouse for use in the boilers, and also for the resulting ash before it was loaded on to trucks or barges for disposal. This photograph is stored in Power Supply Album 6 of 12 that documents Interborough Rapid Transit Company's system of electrical power for New York's first subway system.
